Check out the new second installment of the serial story, Fireside. If you missed the first installment, read here!
What separates an exceptional husband from a no-good, drag out the house by ears kind of husband? I thought I used to know. Thought I knew everything there was to know about Ray. Shows what I know.
The cop stood over me, while Ray, handcuffed and pressed up against a wall, was read his rights.
The cop consulted his yellow flipbook and began to speak.
“I’m officer Costa. Can you tell me where you were and what you were doing on the night of the 18th of August?”
I bristled as I watched the police officers lead Ray down past the foyer and into the dark, still street. Ray looked over at me as the cops led him out. His eyes were wet with tears.
“Where were you the night of the 18th of August?” the officer repeats.
I shake my head, “sorry, I’m just a little rattled about everything. I was out, celebrating with my daughter and her friends. It was a graduation party. She just finished high school.”
“And do you have someone who can verify that?”
“Yes, my daughter and her friends can tell you that I was there.”
“Was your husband there with you at the party?”
“No, he said he had a migraine, he often does, cluster headaches, so he was staying home to recuperate.”
“That’s all for now, but we have more questions for you later.”
“Wait—”
Officer Costa turns around, raises his eyebrows. His face is smooth brown, like supple leather. He’s young, no wrinkles, clear glass skin. He’s got thick black eyebrows. Lips that you want to kiss. He’s handsome.
Now’s not the time to be thinking about how one of the officers investigating you looks hot. Especially when your husband just got hauled off in handcuffs. Seriously Liz, you’ve got to stop it with these intrusive thoughts.
“I, um, well I was wondering if you could let me know why you arrested Ray. I mean he’s never had so much as a speeding ticket. This whole thing has really tilted me off my axis.”
Officer Costa put his hands on his hips, “I’m not at liberty to say ma’am. We are going to check those references. We’ll be in touch.”
Was I really a ma’am? I only turned 36 a few months ago. That hardly seemed like ma’am territory. Let it go Liz.
“When will you let me know what is going on?”
Officer Costa gave me an appraising look. “After we straighten everything out, get a clearer picture of what happened, you’ll know, trust me.”
I nodded, and officer Costa walked out the door, shutting it quietly behind him. I unsqueezed my hand which had been tightly wrapped around the corner of the kitchen island.
Stay tuned for the third installment of Fireside, coming soon!
