1 The dappled light touched the oubliette’s bars. I reach for the light but it is just beyond my hands. Instead, my fingers and palms feel the cool, dank earth. Loose bits of it crumble and land on top of me. Underneath my feet, another rat skitters past. The vermin are growing bolder. Slugs cling to the walls, climbing to heaven. Above, in that damned unreachable world of light I hear voices. How I long to see another’s face. To see anything, except the taunting light, and the maggots, and the slugs, and the rats.

Hey everyone, Breaking Confidence is my debut novel and my first step into the world of historical romance. It’s a story close to my heart—I will never have a first novel again!
